Venture Capital Deal Activity Reaches Highest Level Ever in 2010

ALBUQUERQUE, NM; May 18, 2011 – The New Mexico Venture Capital Association (NMVCA) released the results of its quarterly survey of venture capital and private equity financing in New Mexico and associated year-end statistics, announcing that a record 35 New Mexico companies received financing in 2010, with total financing dollars of $54.7 million. The NMVCA also announced that Q4 2010 financing activity was $6.3 million in 7 transactions. Total dollars invested in 2010 represented an increase of almost 150% over 2009 levels.

“The increase in the total number of financings in New Mexico in 2010 is a strong indication that our venture and entrepreneurial communities are bouncing back,” said Francine Sommer, NMVCA Board Member and Special General Partner of Village Ventures. “New Mexico has reached a critical size where the activity of one firm or one company does not dominate the landscape.”

Investments in 2010 included activity as shown in the table below.

  Q4 2010 Full-Year 2010
Transactions Dollars ($M) Transactions Dollars ($M)
Seed 1 $0.3 4 $1.6

Series C+ 0 $0.0 6 $22.2
Sub-Debt 1 $0.5 1 $0.5

“The trend back to a substantial number of early stage financings in 2010 is particularly promising,” said Sally Corning, NMVCA Board Member and Partner at Sun Mountain Capital. “These new investments should help produce the next crop of successful New Mexico start-up companies.”

The survey is conducted by the NMVCA among its members and other investing entities within New Mexico. Survey results are collected and aggregated by the law firm of Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck, LLP on behalf of the NMVCA and individual survey results remain strictly confidential.
